Portare il lutto a Larimer Avenue- Mourning on Larimer Avenue

An image of the funeral mass of an Italian American soldier killed in action during World War II.  This mass took place at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in the Hill District.

In addition to drinking in the scents and sights of Larimer Avenue as a child, Herb spent much of his life working at the most notable funeral home for East Liberty's Italian Americans, DeRosa's.  As a quotidian witness to grief and loss in the Italian American community, Herb grew to understand and appreciate the manner in which Italian Americans mourn their loved ones.  Listen as he characterizes the many Italian practices and customs that surround portare il lutto, to carry mourning, literally translated.
